Katz’s Delicatessen is a piece of history of the Lower East Side. Most of the tourists coming to New York go there because they want to see the place where Meg Ryan simulated an orgasm in the “Harry meets Sally” movie. Truth is that Meg Ryan did not simulate anything: she just had a slightly above average response to Katz’s pastrami sandwich.
It is better to go to Katz’s for a dinner during the week. You can sit at one of the tables on the side, and peacefully enjoy the three signature experiences at Katz’s: the 1960s interiors, the attitude of the waiters and the quality of their pastrami.
The pastrami literally melts in your mouth, delivering an incredible variety of flavors: lean meat, smoked meat, spices, fat. Everything in one bite. The best way to enjoy it is with the pastrami sandwich. Two slices of bread and more than inch of pure culinary tradition of the Lower East side.
The adventurous gourmet, could also go for the meat platter that combines pastrami, reuben and corned beef. The only caveat is explicitly indicated in the menu: “feeds 3 tourists or one regular customer“.

After a few disappointing and extremely expensive attempts to dine with white truffle in NY, I came to the conclusion that the best way to enjoy this delicacy is to taste it at the production site, in Italy.
Forget about the overly rated white truffle mac and cheese that you can find in New York’s West Village restaurants. At these restaurants, the excessive use of condiments, cheese and sauces overshadows the rich and gentle flavor of the truffle.
Following the three-ingredient paradigm of culinary simplicity and excellence, the best truffle recipe is homemade tagliatelle with unsalted butter and a generous amount of sliced truffle. Period.
Same considerations apply for a truffle based appetizer or snack: a piadina romagnola stuffed with a plain frittata and sliced truffle will elevate this traditional dish to ethereal heights.

Everything started with a scary text message received on my phone while I was finishing some work. I just hoped that my apartment was a “good-enough” shelter for the coming storm.
The roof gardens disseminated across midtown and the two sides of Central Park are so passée. The garden-on-a-van is the new trend.
